RECRUITMENT FAQ

What is CALR looking for?

CALR is looking for gamers who could contribute in one or more areas of our coverage, including on-air reviews, recurring guest appearances, gaming discussion, event coverage, future video content and, for the right person, a possible future co-host role.

The biggest thing we are looking for is personality and communication ability. You do not just need to know games. You need to be able to talk about them.

What kinds of games does CALR cover?

CALR covers a broad range of games and gaming-related material, including PC games, console games, indie games, AAA games, board games, tabletop games, trading card games, RPGs, horror games, retro and classic games, shooters, strategy games, fighting games, gaming hardware and accessories, and gaming culture and industry topics.

You do not need to be an expert in everything. We would rather find someone who knows and loves a few areas deeply than someone pretending to know every game ever made.

What could I actually do with CALR?

  • Review games or gaming products provided to CALR
  • Talk about games on WXUT 88.3 FM
  • Cover genres and games you actually care about
  • Bring your own expertise, opinions and personality to the show
  • Participate in gaming discussions and reviews
  • Potentially contribute to future CALR YouTube/video gaming content
  • Build experience with reviews, radio, interviews and content creation
  • Potentially grow into a recurring contributor or future co-host role

Depending on the person and the opportunity, contributors may take part in one or several of these areas.

Do I automatically get free games?

No. CALR receives games and products for coverage, and contributors may have opportunities to review items supplied to CALR.

We cannot promise that every applicant or contributor will receive games, and applying does not guarantee review assignments. But reviewing games and products supplied to CALR is part of what we are recruiting people to do.

Am I guaranteed to be on the radio?

No. Applying does not guarantee airtime or a recurring role.

We want to find people who are a good fit for CALR, sound good on mic, can talk naturally about games and can contribute something interesting to the show. For the right people, there may be opportunities for on-air reviews, discussions and recurring appearances.

Would I have to become a co-host right away?

CALR is looking for potential future co-host talent, but we are not asking applicants to walk in on day one and become a full-time co-host.

Do I need radio, podcasting or journalism experience?

No.

Experience is welcome, but a polished résumé or professional broadcasting background is not the main thing we care about.

We want to know: Can you talk about games in a way people actually want to listen to?

Knowledge, personality, enthusiasm, opinions and the ability to communicate matter more to us than sounding like a corporate announcer.

Do I need to send a professional demo?

No.

A simple recording of you talking about a game you love, hate, recently played or have strong opinions about can tell us a lot.

You can send either a short audio sample or a link to a video sample.

What should I talk about in my sample?

Talk about games.

Pick something you genuinely know or care about and give us a sense of your personality.

Explain why you loved something. Explain why you hated it. Review a game. Talk about a mechanic that drives you crazy. Defend an unpopular gaming opinion. Tell us why everyone else is wrong about your favorite game.

We are not looking for perfection–We are listening for how you sound, how you think and how you communicate.

Do I have to live in Toledo?

Local Toledo-area applicants are preferred.

CALR is produced in Toledo and broadcasts on WXUT 88.3 FM, so being local makes participation in on-air and other CALR activities considerably easier.

Do I have to attend the University of Toledo?

No. University of Toledo students are especially welcome, but you do not have to be a current UToledo student to apply.

Are gamer girls really especially encouraged to apply?

Yes.

CALR wants more female perspectives represented in our gaming coverage and on-air conversations.

If you’re a gamer girl who knows games, has opinions and would enjoy talking about them on the air, we want to hear from you.

The recruitment opportunity remains open to gamers generally.

What about YouTube and video content?

CALR is also interested in people who may be comfortable participating in future gaming-related YouTube and video content.

That could create opportunities beyond traditional radio discussion and reviews.

You do not have to be an established YouTuber or professional video personality to apply.

What should I send when I apply?

Send us:

  1. A short introduction
  2. What you play and the kinds of games you know best
  3. What you would most like to cover for CALR
  4. Either a short audio sample or a link to a video sample

The sample does not need to be professionally produced.

We mainly want to hear how you talk about games.
